Retro Roadside is a visual collection of the roadside attractions, vintage signs, and old buildings that have always caught my eye. I've been photographing these kinds of places for years, but in 2020—during a cross-country move from California back to our home in Pennsylvania—I finally had a reason to start sharing them. That’s when I launched the Retro Roadside Instagram account. What started as a way to document the trip has grown into an ongoing project, giving these fading landmarks a place to be seen and appreciated. Some of the images have also found their way off the screen—I present selected photographs through vintage-style scope viewers, reminiscent of the souvenir viewers I loved as a kid. It’s a small way of reconnecting with that sense of wonder and turning these roadside moments into something you can hold in your hands.
